Ikan continues to push the bar with its new VX9 LCD Monitor
By
When I first reviewed one of Ikan’s awesome monitors over a year ago I was blown away by the quality it had and the meager price I bought it for. Since then the company has continued to impress. From their lineup of solid monitoring systems to their top notch Lightweight, modular and upgradeable DSLR support rigs this i a company that keeps up with new technologies and work flows.
Introducing the VX9
Ikan’s latest addition to their monitor family is the VX9. This new model, in my opinion, has the potential to be the “go to” monitor for filmmakers and DLSR shooters. One thing that impresses me is that the folks at Ikan listen to their customers and target audience.
Recently, via my Twitter account, one of my followers had asked a question about on board monitors. As I retweeted it to my followers, the fine support staff at Ikan was there to answer questions and provide links to answers. A company that is using the latest technologies to support potential customers? They get my money all day.
Whats so great about the VX9?
With an 8.9 inch viewing area and 1024 x 600 resolution, the VX9 is the perfect size for filmmakers to use on any shoot. The picture is crystal clear and allows aspect ratios of 480, 720, and 1080p/i and also 576i. Under-scanning and over-scanning are available as well.
One thing I love is the ability to do a freeze comparison. This allows me to see different setups of lighting and more in camera. This is a great feature.
Connectivity galore!
The VX9 comes with industry standard HD SDI inputs as well as composite and component. Have an HD Camera with HDMI connections? Awesome, connect the VX9 for a picture so clear you will think you are inside the monitor.
Ikan is always looking out for the filmmaker when it comes to battery power. The VX9 is able to use Canon, Panasonic, and Sony DV batteries. Their price on the base plate is minimal too.
One thing Ikan is great at is giving options to users of its equipment. In addition to the connectivity for picture, the VX9 has 1/4 20 threaded mounting holes on all four sides of the camera. This would have been so welcomed on a film I shot using the Redrock Micro adapter that flips the image. We had to create our own rig to hold the monitor we used on the shoot and it was a pain!
Price
A mere $1,149 and this bad boy is in your arsenal! That's a lot of screen room for that price.
Final Thoughts
The VX9 is super lightweight, the picture is clear as a bell and the price wont destroy even the poorest of indie filmmakers. Its connectivity options at state of the art and Ikan continues to listen to its clients. 2 huge thumbs up from us at Filmmaking Central! Add this to your film making arsenal today!
